The AI Fraud War: Who’s Winning?
Harnessing AI to fight the fraudsters
Everyday we see examples of fraudsters and scammers using AI to dupe people – deep fake versions of Martin Lewis encouraging you to invest, a fake profile on Tinder who is really a romance scammer, or a fake website which looks identical to its real counterpart, you name it…it feels like we cannot trust anything we see or read.
Fear not, there are some knights in shining armour who are taking the scammers on and using AI as a force for good. Peter Griffin of AVIEL Intelligence and Alex Somervell of Ask Silver are both harnessing the power of AI to identify scams and fraudsters, and using the intelligence they harvest from the scammers to both protect consumers and inform financial institutions.
Peter and Alex will be showing us examples of how their solutions work in action and don’t worry, no technical jargon in sight!

Peter Griffin
Peter is the co-founder of AVIEL Intelligence - the anti-scam intelligence company. Peter and his co-founder Joe Tallett both previously worked at Google where they witnessed the scale of the scam problem and how bad actors target victims. In 2024 they founded AVIEL. AVIEL deploys a 'squad' of AI-powered synthetic personas to take on the scammers. All carefully overseen by the AVIEL investigation team, these personas infiltrate scam networks, chat with scammers as if they were victims, and extract key financial information. The AVIEL personas have now had tens of thousands of real conversations with scammers and are returning vital intelligence every day; including 'mule' account identifiers.
Fun Fact: Peter was once an Anthropologist at the University of Cambridge, where he specialised in Sub-Saharan African witchcraft... which has now bizarrely become a common practice amongst scammers (witchcraft, not anthropology).
Alex Somervell
Alex previously started two businesses in the consumer space, appearing on BBC Dragons’ Den in 2018. He came into fraud prevention through a personal experience; his dad was scammed out of almost £150,000, most of his life savings. Years later Alex launched Ask Silver, a Scam Checker that has been featured on the BBC, Times and Which?, and is used by Metro Bank and the City of London Police Victim Care Unit. Over 50,000 scams have been detected and consumers can report to the authorities with a single tap.
